My Review of Mahindra Scorpio-N Petrol AT

My Review of Mahindra Scorpio-N Petrol AT

Introduction

For more than a decade now, Scorpio by Mahindra has been a household name in India. Mahindra, with the Scorpio-N, wanted to marry rugged, powerful, off-road suitability with modern luxury and safety. In this review, I am going to share my journey of owning the Mahindra Scorpio-N Petrol AT and how it has become a part of my life.

Petrol Mundane Physics: The Case for the Mahindra Scorpio-N Petrol AT

Over the years, I have driven many different cars, but there is something about the Scorpio-N that felt like coming home. After scrolling for a moment, we realized two jewels of Indian automobiles stood out, the Tata Safari and Mahindra Scorpio. So, when the time came to upgrade, it was the Scorpio-N that came to my mind because it felt like the next chapter of this Indian auto folklore.

Exterior Design & Disco Presence Road

The Scorpio-N is an absolute looker with its imposing front grille, chiselled body lines, and high stance. The new design has a classic Scorpio feel to it but with some hints that are on trend. One of my favourites is the iconic opened sideways tailgate with the Scorpio heritage.

Interior Comfort and Features

Open the door, and the Scorpio-N welcomes you with a coffee-black leatherette upholstery that feels upmarket. It’s every bit as plush, spacious and road-trip ready as a full-blown Lexus. Legroom and comfort is also ample in both rows, making it well suited for family trips.

Engine Performance and Power

The Scorpio-N Petrol AT also hides a mean 2L mStallion TGDi under the hood. Its a fun punchy motor which makes any drive fun. It doesn’t matter if I’m on a highway or a twisty road, the smoothness and sophistication with which this engine delivers power keeps me entertained.

Engagement: , Torque Converter

Its 6-speed automatic gearbox is absolutely a gem that provides buttery shifts making the drive feel lively. This means that it is well-tuned to both city and highway driving, which strikes a balance here well.

Driving Dynamics and Handling

Embiggened but not ungainly, the Scorpio-N is quite nimble on its feet. The electric steering is light and responsive, and the turning radius is also commendable. That instills confidence which is good because there are times we will need to weave around city traffic or thread through tight corners.

Ride Comfort and Suspension

The Scorpio-N is equipped with a suspension system designed to absorb bumps and potholes. The SUV soaks up bumps whether it is potholes or rocky roads and keeps the passengers relaxed.

Safety and Build Quality

Mahindra has been vocal about the importance of safety and it certainly reflects in the Scorpio-N as well, having received a 5-star rating at the Global NCAP for adult occupants. Child occupant protection was rated at 3-stars, and while build quality is seemed to be typically strong, some reservations were expressed in minor crashes.

Technology and Infotainment

We found that the audio quality can use some improvement, but the Scorpio-N’s infotainment system does support wireless Android Auto. At times, from a software perspective, the display goes blank for a few seconds which Mahindra is expected to fix in future updates.

Fuel Economy: The Good and the Bad

Considering it was a petrol SUV, we didn’t expect great fuel economy. In the dense traffic conditions of Mumbai, I would get around 6-7 KMPL and it would go up to around 12-14 KMPL on the highways. The Scorpio-N is quite a performer, and this is a reasonable compromise for it.

Scorpio-N vs. Other Competitors

Not just that, before we were finalizing the Scorpio-N, we also considered things like the Toyota Innova Hycross. Although it had all the right features, the tough appeal and grunt of the Scorpio-N tipped the scales in its favour for us. The rugged construction and off-road capability gives it more versatility than a lot of competitors.

Challenges and Limitations

Playing safe with the Scorpio-N has its fair share of limitations too. There is no 4×4 option available for the 4-cylinder petrol variant, which might curb some of its off-road potential. There is also some body roll, typical with most high Centre of Gravity (CoG) vehicles, which means that it has to be driven carefully through the corners.

Building my life around the ‘Scorpio Effect’

My Scorpio-N experience has rekindled my passion for driving and road trips. No longer a simple mode of navigating to and fro, it dances with me as I take my journeys. This car has helped me go visit more places and to appreciate the journey leading to it.

Conclusion

Mahindra Scorpio-N Petrol AT Mahindra Scorpio-N is a little more than a car. It combines rugged good looks, a powerful engine, and an interior that suits your needs for both comfort and adventure. If you want an SUV that inspires confidence on all terrains, then Scorpio-N is worth every rupee that you would spend on it.
